Girl in Front of Ty Ty Mansion

Ananda Balingit- LeFils, “Girl in Front of Ty Ty Mansion” (2011), gouache on paper, 42″ x 29″.

“This work is an investigation into portraiture as a way of documenting and exploring my relationships with an perceptions of close friends and family. I am interested in the static nature of an artifice of the posed portrait. By referencing early African folk paintings and Olan Mills photography, I seek to depict the tender awkwardness that those works exemplify. Both imagined and factual, character traits and general themes are revealed through decorative elements.”
